Two teenagers were successfully rescued by bystanders and Porter Police Officer Marty Gonzalez from a rip current off a private beach in Porter on Aug. 12. One of the teens was transported to an area hospital, but treated and released. The other was unharmed.

It was the third successful rescue in the same location that day. Gonzalez said there was clearly a rip current in that area. He said the waves looked moderate from shore, but were quite large once among them.

“Quite honestly, if it wasn’t for those gentlemen with the paddleboards, if they hadn’t gotten out there, the circumstances wouldn’t have worked out the way they did,” Gonzalez said. “They actually got out to the boy before I did.” Porter Police Public Information Officer Tom Blythe said police get very minimal water rescue training at the police academy and recommended practice is not to put yourself into the water. “We at the Porter Police Department are not water rescue by any stretch of the imagination,” he said. “Unfortunately, over the years we’ve encountered a lot of tragedies.”
