A Benton Harbor, Michigan woman is in custody after police said she left a dog locked in a hot car for two and a half hours in late July in the parking lot of Northwest Health-Porter.

Dkara Scott, 18, was booked into the Porter County Jail on Saturday on a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty, according to the jail booking roster.“It should be noted while speaking with Dkara at no point did she believe that leaving the dog in the car on a hot day was a wrong decision,” police said in a report from the Porter County Sheriff’s Department.

“I further observed that the dog did not have any water and that the dog was panting very heavy due to being so hot,” the report notes. “Once the car was open it was clear that dog was in distress due to the heat inside of the car,” according to the report. “It should also be noted that while trying to unlock the car the heat coming out of the crack in the door was overwhelming.”
