The Drop Gangs initiative — including the vehicle — is funded through a grant from Saskatchewan\u0027s civil forfeiture program.
Through a grant of about $70,000 from the provincial civil forfeiture program, city police have developed the Drop Gangs program to raise awareness about street gangs and outlaw motorcycle gangs and help people connect to resources to leave those lifestyles.
Police also aim to inform members of the public about how to avoid inadvertently supporting gangs, which happens when people attend events organized by outlaw motorcycle gangs or buy “support” merchandise. “We’re hoping that it makes involvement in these organizations less attractive, and thereby reducing the numbers and disrupting their activities,” said Sgt. Dave Larocque with the Integrated Intelligence Unit, which includes Saskatoon police and RCMP members and gathers information on organized crime groups. Larocque is leading the program.run by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit in British Columbia.
The program will use the visibility of its vehicle — which seems like a “rolling billboard,”Larocque quipped — a GMC Yukon wrapped with images relating to street and outlaw motorcycle gangs. It will visit community events, events organized by motorcycle gangs, locations where there are gang, drug or organized crime-related warrant executions, and at presentations.Photo by Michelle Berg
