Police have been granted tough stop and search powers
West Yorkshire Police have been granted emergency powers in troubled areas in Leeds as the force battles to keep people safe.
Increased stop and search powers were put in place in areas of Harehills today . The move comes after a 27-year-old man was murdered in Compton Road, Harehills around 3am. The road was closed for several hours and residents told LeedsLive they were fed up of crime in the area. Community leaders also weighed in, with Neil Holmes, 53, who helps run Facebook group Harehills Community Watch, speaking of his anger about what he continues to see on the streets. And police have acted, using Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to implement emergency powers.
Superintendent Russ Hughes of Leeds District Police said: "This order has been put in place due to concerns after the recent violent incidents in Harehills. These additional search powers give officers an increased ability to stop those involved in carrying weapons. “This is about disrupting, deterring, and bringing to justice those who involve themselves in this type of criminal behaviour. Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team also continue to carry out increased patrols in the area to deter any further incidents and reassure the wider community."
