A Round Lake, Illinois man died after a Monday afternoon crash on Interstate 80/94 in Lake County after police said he fled the scene of a traffic stop.
Bryan I. Flores, 20, died at an Illinois trauma hospital after being taken there by helicopter. Police later found two duffel bags containing marijuana in the trunk of his gray 2012 Kia Optima, according to a release from Sgt. Glen Fifield, public information officer for the Lowell Post of Indiana State Police. The crash occurred around 1:45 p.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of the interstate at the 12.8 mile-marker.
The trooper returned to his police car and was going to initiate a pursuit but immediately turned off his lights and pulled back over to the side of the interstate and chose not to chase the vehicle due to the high traffic volume. Approximately four minutes later, the Indiana State Police Regional Dispatch Center Lowell Post received 911 calls of a serious crash on I-80/94 at the 12.8 mile-marker. Callers reported a gray Kia Optima had rear-ended a semi while traveling at a high rate of speed.
