So far in 2023, at least five people have died in accidents involving a pedestrian in Tucson, according to Tucson police.
The most recent incident resulted in the death of Frederick Sherrill Ybarra, a 66-year-old man, who died from injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run accident on Saturday.
At about 9 p.m. that day, officers responded to the area near East 22nd Street and Kolb Road for a collision involving a truck and a pedestrian, whom police identified as Ybarra. Personnel from the Tucson Fire Department took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he died on Tuesday. "Mr. Ybarra was crossing South Kolb Road, from west to east, when he was struck by the truck traveling southbound," said Sgt. Richard Gradillas, a spokesperson with Tucson police."Midblock crossing by the pedestrian is the major contributing factor of the collision; however, the truck fled the scene and that is now what we are focusing on."
