Once officers arrived, they saw the man inside a second-floor stairwell and demanded he drop the knife.

A man was shot and killed by police after charging at officers with a knife inside the second-floor staircase of an apartment in Queens.

It happened just before 7 p.m. Friday on 62nd Ave near 102nd Street in Rego Park. Sources close to the investigation say it started during a baby's birthday party, when the suspect, the baby's grandfather, started stabbing his wife. She fled and ran down the hallway, screaming for help. Neighbors called 911, and the first four officers to arrive ran up the stairs, when they saw the 46-year-old man in second-floor stairwell and demanded he drop the knife.

""As soon as they walked out the staircase, a male is charging at them with a knife. They give commands to drop, he doesn't stop, the sergeant tried to use histaser, but the two other officers, they fired their weaponsm," said NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.Man accused of squatting in Queens home faces judge, promises 'revelation' in case
