Last month, Mr Malkinson’s conviction was overturned on the basis of fresh evidence unearthed by the charityA suspect, referred to in proceedings as “Mr B”, was arrested earlier this year and remains on bail pending further inquiries.has apologised and admitted Mr Malkinson was the victim of a “grave miscarriage of justice”.

Jurors were also not told that two witnesses who gave evidence for the prosecution had criminal convictions for offences of dishonesty. “Helen Pitcher must now take accountability and apologise to Andy, or else resign. A new legal mechanism should be introduced to challenge CCRC failings, and lawyers investigating miscarriages of justice should be given a right of access to police files.”

“We recognise that Andrew has had a very long journey to clear his name, but sadly the evidence that led to the CCRC referring his case only became available years after his conviction,” she said. “Whilst we hope this outcome gives him a long overdue sense of justice, we acknowledge that it does not return the years he has lost. I have offered to meet with him to personally deliver this apology.
