Police say two EMTs were sent to a bar in the West Brighton neighborhood for a report of a disorderly person.

Police say two EMTs were sent to the Funky Monkey bar on Forest Avenue in the West Brighton neighborhood around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a disorderly person.

The EMTs found a 37-year-old man in front of the bar, escorted him to the ambulance and began to drive him to Richmond University Medical Center. According to police, as they were driving down Forest Avenue, the man brandished a firearm and fired one round, striking one EMT in the shoulder. The EMT who was driving then pulled the ambulance over, and the suspect got out and tried to run off.

Police say he was quickly apprehended by a retired NYPD detective and an off-duty Department of Sanitation official.
