Emily Spurrell admits to being open to change but said scrapping post would not cut costs

Merseyside’s police and crime commissioner has launched a robust defence of her job but said she would be open to the role changing in future.

Mrs Spurrell comfortably secured a second term as the region’s PCC last weekend, winning 152,640 votes – a majority of 61%, up 3% in 2021. However, the number of electors taking part fell by 6% from 30% three years earlier. “When we brief people and present on the work my office is doing, people are pleasantly surprised about how much is going on, but clearly that message isn’t out there to the public yet and I want people to see it. Whatever model that is, whether it’s PCC or deputy mayor, we are covering so much in terms of scrutiny and oversight of the police, we are investing in initiatives giving young people opportunities that haven’t been around for decades.

To do so in Merseyside would require an act of parliament, given the Liverpool City Region contains Halton, which falls under the Cheshire Constabulary boundaries. Despite this, Mrs Spurrell said she felt there was value for the region in the role. “We need something because they should be overseen the way fire authorities and others do and I think we need to do it in the most efficient and effective way possible. I work with lots of deputy mayors across the country, I’ve seen what they do in Manchester and there’s definitely merit in that.

She said: “I think the discussion should be a package of devolution and how do we achieve what we want out of this role. I think there is a misnomer around the fact if you get rid of it and put it with the mayor you’ll save a load of money.
