Cele defended his silence on the N1 highway assault incident, saying there must be consequences for cops who break the law.
Cele condemned the incident and said many police officers were “doing an absolutely good job”, contrary to popular belief. He told MPs the bad apples in the SAPS were a byproduct of the social challenges, including violence, that ordinary South Africans were exposed to in their communities. The members of SAPS, many of them are doing an absolutely good job [and] there's no doubt about it... Are these members angry? Yes, these members come from highly angry communities in our society.
However, the minister admitted that the existing structures of the SAPS were inadequate to assist police who were struggling to cope with their mental health and the demands of their jobs.We are enhancing the structures that must help the police with their welfare and mental health by getting more psychologists and social workers in the organisation.
“There was nothing new that one would have come up with other than filling in the gaps, as one has filled the gaps in calling for the police to be cooperative on the matter and doing what they are supposed to do,” he said.
