Police said the man charged in the shooting and the victim were among dozens of spectators watching people play soccer.
as the two watched a soccer match at a field in Northwest Washington’s Adams Morgan neighborhood in July, according to authorities.Pedro Antonio Funes, 33, was charged with first-degree murder while armed in the July 26 shooting of Arnold Humberto Solis, 30, of Northwest Washington.
A D.C. Superior Court judge on Thursday ordered Funes detained and set a hearing for Oct. 4. A defense attorney was not listed in court documents. The shooting occurred during a nighttime game at Marie Reed Elementary School on Champlain Street NW. An arrest warrant describes Funes — who police referred to as Fuentes — and Solis as among 70 people on or around the field.
Police said in the warrant that the men had purchased food and beer together before the game, and sat next to each other. Witnesses told police that the men had appeared to be friends, and that they did not see or hear a dispute or altercation. But at 8:22 p.m., police asserted in the warrant, Funes “produced a pistol, placed it against decedent’s face and shot decedent through the head.” Police said Funes “then calmly walked away … and off of the soccer field.
At a news conference the night of the shooting, acting D.C. police chief Pamela A. Smith said authorities believe the two men had some sort of dispute. The 31-page arrest affidavit does not describe a possible motive.HAND CURATED
