Police arrest suspect in armed robbery spree at Coronado park, ferry landing [Breaking]
Jail records showed he was booked around 8 p.m. Friday into the downtown San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of 14 felony counts of robbery, a felony charges of assault with a firearm and battery with serious bodily injury, and a misdemeanor count of carrying a loaded firearm in public.“We would like to thank the victims for their patience and support during this investigation,” the police statement said. “We will continue to be proactive and work with our community to keep Coronado safe.
According to police, the robbery spree last Saturday began around 10:30 p.m. when a gunman approached a couple seated on a bench in Centennial Park, near First Street and Orange Avenue, and displayed a gun as he demanded they hand over their cellphones and valuables. The man then robbed another five people at gunpoint on the other side of the park before approaching an eighth victim, a woman, at a nearby parking lot by the ferry landing. He allegedly struck her several times on the head with the weapon.
“As the woman was being assaulted by the suspect, a group of three came across the in-progress assault,”. “The suspect then pointed the gun at this group and demanded valuables.” Around this time, five of the earlier victims approached and wrestled the gun away from the man, who was able to run away and drive off, police said. Two of the people who wrestled the gun from him sustained injuries and were treated by paramedics at the scene, while the woman who was pistol-whipped was taken to a hospital for treatment.
