An unidentified man found dead on the side of the road in Victoria’s Gippsland region may have been sleeping rough, police say. A motorist travelling on Waterloo Rd, Trafalgar noticed the man, believed to be in his 60s, about 10.30am on Sunday. Police believe he had been hit by a car overnight or earlier in the morning, with Detective Sergeant Peter Romanis on Monday saying the man had been dead for some time. The last time the man was seen alive was on Waterloo Rd about 7.
The man was not wearing shoes when he was found, leading police to explore whether he was homeless. “It may be indicative that he might have been sleeping rough but until we identify who he is we’re working on a number of different avenues of inquiry,” Romanis said. There are signs the car may have left the road and that speed was a factor. Romanis said he would be “gobsmacked” if the driver didn’t realise they had hit someone.
