A lobe of the polar vortex is expected to bring a dangerous arctic outbreak to the Northeast from Friday into Saturday. It could also bring some of the coldest wind chills in several years for some cities.
Gusty northwesterly winds will lead to wind chills between negative 40 and negative 50 degrees for some parts of upstate New York and New England, with the potential for even colder wind chills of negative 60 degrees for interior Maine, matching some of the coldest wind chills observed in decades. Portland, Maine, could see wind chills down into the negative 40s, translating to the coldest since 1971. High temperatures are expected to stay well below freezing Saturday afternoon.
Boston could see wind chills near 30 below zero, with New York City not far behind at 10 to 20 below zero. The good news is that the cold snap will be brief, and warmer temperatures will return Sunday and into next week.
