The disruption could occur in February, bringing some of the coldest temperatures of the season at the end of winter.

A late-season polar vortex could extend America's winter-like temperatures into early spring, according to AccuWeather.So far in December, temperatures across the nation have trended above average. The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center expects above-average temperatures to affect more than half the U.S. over the next two weeks, according to its most recent temperature outlooks. Alaska has been among the states with the strongest above-average temperatures.

An NWS fact sheet about the phenomenon says the polar vortex 'always exists near the poles but weakens in summer and strengthens in winter.''The term 'vortex' refers to the counterclockwise flow of air that helps keep the colder air near the Poles,' the fact sheet said. 'Many times during winter...the polar vortex will expand, sending cold air southward with the jet stream.
