SEN. Grace Poe raised an alarm Thursday over the unabated proliferation of text scams perpetrated using dubious cellphone subscriber identity modules , despite passage almost a year ago of the SIM registrtion law.

As author of the SIM law, Poe pointed out that “the law aims to protect SIM users from scams and hasten law enforcement in investigating phone-related scams.” Poe, chairperson of the franchise-granting Senate Committee on Public Services, recalled that it is now “more than a year since the law was passed and despite the termination of the SIM registration, she noted, “text scams and other mobile-related fraud continue to hound the public.”

Poe added: “However, reports that thousands of registered SIMs seized are being used as a tool for scamming and other cyber fraud raise questions about the effective implementation of the law.”
