Pneumonic Plague Death in Siberia After Lab Test Tube Break, 200 Quarantined
Pneumonic Plague, Siberia, Irkutsk

A lab technician in Irkutsk, Siberia, died of pneumonic plague after breaking a test tube. At least 200 contacts are quarantined as officials rush to contain the outbreak.

A female lab technician in Irkutsk, Siberia, has died of pneumonic plague after breaking a test tube, leading to at least 200 people being placed under quarantine. Darya Shipilova, 28, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, where she is believed to have contracted the illness. She was admitted to hospital on September 29 and died two days later after being placed on a ventilator, according to local news outlet People of Baikal.

As many as 200 people who may have had contact with Shipilova are under quarantine, the outlet added, without providing further details. There was no immediate statement from Russia's health ministry, but Alexei Tsydenov, governor of Russia's Buryatia region, had reported in a social media post earlier that a woman in the neighbouring Irkutsk region had died of plague.

Officials Respond to Pneumonic Plague Outbreak

Russia's Chief State Sanitary Doctor Anna Popova rushed to Siberia to take personal charge of the outbreak, according to reports. A mask decree has been implemented in Irkutsk. Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev said an extraordinary meeting of the regional sanitary and anti-epidemic commission was held with Popova. The reason was information about a suspected case of a particularly dangerous infectious disease in a resident of the region.

Kobzev earlier refused to name the suspected disease. He said all identified contacts had been placed under medical observation. As of today, none of the contacts has any signs of illness, and their laboratory test results are negative.

Maxim Modin, mayor of nearby Shelekhov, told residents not to spread rumours or unreliable information and to use only official sources. He claimed it is too early to draw final conclusions and that they will wait for the specialists' findings.

Understanding Pneumonic Plague and Its Risks

Pneumonic plague is a severe lung infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It is the most serious form of plague and is highly infectious. According to the World Health Organization, pneumonic plague can be fatal if not treated early. It can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets, making early detection and quarantine crucial.

The Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute is a research facility that studies dangerous infectious diseases. Lab workers there handle dangerous pathogens, and accidents such as broken test tubes can lead to exposure. Shipilova's death highlights the risks faced by laboratory personnel working with highly infectious agents.

Health officials have been pictured in Irkutsk wearing hazmat suits as a precaution. The quarantine of contacts and the mask decree are part of efforts to contain any potential spread. The situation is being closely monitored by both regional and national authorities.

Pneumonic plague outbreaks are rare but can cause widespread concern. In this case, swift action by officials, including the quarantine of contacts and the deployment of the Chief State Sanitary Doctor, aims to prevent further infections. The public has been urged to rely on official information and avoid rumours.
