Anthony Albanese will facilitate the construction of a controversial new stadium in Hobart to enable the state to have a team in the AFL.

Anthony Albanese is expected to unveil a significant infrastructure investment for Tasmania this weekend that will facilitate the construction ofAmid hostility to a taxpayer-funded football stadium from the state Labor opposition, the federal Liberals and federal Tasmanian independents Andrew Wilkie and Jacqui Lambie, Mr Albanese is poised to inject as much as $240 million into the project.

Mr Rockliff has planned for a stadium to be built at Macquarie Point in Hobart as part of a precinct worth about $715 million.Mr Albanese will arrive with his chequebook at the weekend and sources said it was possible Commonwealth money would be used to facilitate the construction of the stadium by paying for associated remediation work and housing for low-wage workers such as nurses, which will be part of the precinct.

Mr Albanese met Opposition Leader Rebecca White when in Hobart earlier this month and discussed the situation with her. At the time, he hinted at how Commonwealth funds would be spent. “One of the things that I’ve said is that we need to look at housing, we need to look at the way that the beautiful foreshore at the Derwent operates.
