Anthony Albanese says strong economic and national security credentials, and keeping promises, are vital to staying in power.

Anthony Albanese has told Labor’s true believers the party needs to set itself up to govern for the long term if it is to leave a lasting legacy, and that requires havingAs ministers and factional bosses worked behind the scenes tsecurity pact ahead of Friday’s national security debate, the prime minister said everything the government had achieved could be undone unless the party consolidated itself in power.

“We’ve seen a first-class fibre NBN replaced with copper, ignoring the productivity benefits,” he said. “We’ve seen the NDIS pushed to the brink.“Put simply, we seek long-term government because it’s the difference of whether we shape the future or the future shapes us.” During the debate on economic policy following Mr Albanese’s speech, there was no mention of the tax cuts from delegates, while a much-vaunted motion from the CFMEU demanding a 40 per cent super profits tax on all companies with turnovers above $100 million, was diluted significantly.

Although the numbers have never existed among the 402 delegates to pass a motion condemning the AUKUS security pact, there is significant unrest among the rank-and-file. The government has been aware that a hostile debate could damage Labor’s national security credentials with voters.Unable to prevent a debate, Defence Minister and Right factional boss Richard Marles, and Defence Industry Minister and Left factional boss Pat Conroy, moved to take control.

However, if that fails, as is certain, the conference as a whole could vote to adopt Mr Marles’ and Mr Conroy’s amendment, given it provides the assurances the Left-aligned unions have been seeking, while not denigrating AUKUS. Mr Albanese also used his speech to warn against the Greens’ populist policy proposals, saying a more moderate approach that did not alienate voters was more sustainable.
