People have reacted with anger after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made comments about transgender people
Rishi Sunak has come under fire for 'sickening and 'ridiculous' comments after weighing in on debates about transgender people and sex education.
His comments follow a conference in which multiple Cabinet members have used their own speeches to mention transgender issues, with Health Secretary Steve Barclay announcing a ban on trans women from female NHS wards and Home Secretary Suella Braverman saying she would forbid sex offenders from changing gender. The subject has been an increasingly important one for activists on the right of the Conservative Party, with two stands at the conference centre in Manchester focused on the issue.
Mr Sunak has been accused of ‘stoking a culture war’ afrer his comments ignited fury among the trans community in Manchester, the M.E.N reports. Chris Northwood, Manchester's first trans councillor, said: "With the NHS in freefall, the ongoing cost of living crisis and people worried about affording energy bills again this winter, you'd hope the leader of this country had better things to do than stoke up a culture war against trans people like myself.
“He’s used biggest conference speech to announce cancellations and spew hate.” Cllr Birchall said the comment “made it okay” to attack the trans community by painting them as bullies. “He doesn’t understand and has never had to wrestle with your head telling you one this and your body telling you another. His comments are damaging and part of a strategy by the Government to attack minorities to hide the fact they are not actually doing anything on matters such as climate change.”
