Blocked drains are a common household issue, but a plumbing professional has shared a simple method for unblocking them - and it doesn't involve vinegar or baking soda
Blocked drains rank among the most irritating domestic problems, frequently appearing at the most inconvenient moments. Whether it’s the kitchen or bathroom, the gradual accumulation of dirt, grease, soap residue, and hair can result in sluggish drainage or complete blockages, leaving homeowners frustrated and often unsure of how to fix the issue effectively.
With numerous DIY solutions circulating on the internet, it’s easy to grab household basics such as baking soda and vinegar. However, according to plumbing experts, this approach isn’t always the most effective option for every situation, and it can sometimes waste time and effort. Various kinds of blockages demand different strategies, and pinpointing the exact location of the obstruction is crucial, reports the Express. Kitchen sinks typically experience build-ups from grease and food waste, whilst bathroom drains frequently contend with mixtures of soap residue, hair, and dead skin cells. Each type of blockage requires a targeted approach for successful removal. Seasoned plumber and Ace Plumbing CEO Justin Cornforth emphasised the importance of these targeted approaches when dealing with blocked drains, reports the Mirror . He cautioned against wasting effort on traditional remedies in specific situations, stating: 'Don't spend your time on methods like mixing baking soda and vinegar or other homemade solutions.' Whilst this mixture may assist with minor kitchen blockages, Justin explicitly states it 'does nothing with hair and bathroom clogs,' highlighting the limitations of relying solely on common household items. When addressing persistent bathroom blockages, particularly those triggered by hair, he maintains it’s 'better to use mechanical methods rather than the ones that work on a chemical level.' His primary suggestion is investing in a drain snake, a device he describes as 'excellent for removing clogs' as it 'effectively catches hair, freeing up the drain.' He also highlighted the significance of quality: 'A drain snake made of stainless steel would be a great long-lasting choice,' in contrast to cheaper plastic versions that can snap and make matters worse, potentially creating a bigger problem than the original blockage. For those without a drain snake available, Justin recommends using a wire coat hanger as an alternative. Straighten it completely, maintaining a small hook at one end, and gently insert it into the drain to extract hair and other debris. This practical method can be surprisingly effective when applied carefully and patiently. Kitchen blockages, however, frequently respond well to enzymatic drain cleaners . These natural products use enzymes, and occasionally bacteria, to break down organic material such as fat, starch, and protein. According to Justin, they are 'better' than vinegar, baking soda, and even harsh chemical alternatives for grease-related clogs. Whilst they may take longer to work and are less effective on mineral build-up, their gentle, environmentally-friendly nature makes them a preferred option for regular kitchen maintenance. For those wanting to abandon the traditional vinegar and baking soda combination, these practical and natural alternatives offer a plumber-approved approach to tackle blockages without harming your pipes, or testing your patience in the process.
