A senior minister has been grilled over the failure of the Voice referendum, with questions raised over what the government had learnt after Australians decisively voted No.

The Voice to Parliament, which would have seen the Constitution altered to recognise First Nations and establish a body to advise parliament on Indigenous issues, failed to reach both high benchmarks for referendum success on Saturday.Sky News Australia's chief election analyst Tom Connell called the result just after 7:20pm when New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania fell.

Sunrise host Natalie Barr described it as a"landslide defeat" for the Yes campaign and wondered how did Labor"get this so wrong". "So what have you learn from that, $400 million down the drain on something people said No," the Channel 7 presenter asked. At that time, the Yes vote held a commanding lead with 60 per cent of Australians indicating they would accept the proposed change, according to a YouGov poll.A final survey on Friday put the nail in the coffin for the Voice, after another poll showed 51 per cent intended or were leaning to vote against the proposal.
