The Playdate , a charming handheld gaming device with a crank, has proven its capabilities beyond games. Now, a wheelchair-like add-on called PlayBot could enhance its mobility and transform it into an interactive pet robot . France-based hardware DIYer Guillaume Loquin developed PlayBot, a dock attached to two wheels and a motor, with 3D-printed components. The dock uses the Playdate 's accelerometer and microphone to interact with users and its surroundings.
Combined with PlayBot's built-in IR, distance, and light sensors, the Playdate becomes a playful desk companion. When the crank is turned, it cycles through various eye types, adding to the bot's personality. PlayBot is built using a Teensy 4.1 microcontroller and is a relatively simple project for those with DIY experience. It also serves as a charging dock for the Playdate. The developer states that a full charge provides approximately 45 minutes of activity. PlayBot's open-source nature allows for further development and customization by developers and animators
