Platform engineering is overtaking DevOps as the term cloud native people use to describe themselves.

Platform engineering is overtaking DevOps as the term cloud native people use to describe themselves. Once hailed as the savior of organizational dysfunction, DevOps is causing friction in teams finding that operations is work they never really wanted to do.

To get back to a happier balance, DevOps teams are finding that platform engineering helps them to split out operations from application development so that each function can return to focusing on what they do best.presentation at the 2009 O'Reilly Velocity Conference where the lack of collaboration between frustrated developer and operations teams was highlighted in a dramatic and entertaining fashion. The term DevOps was coined to imply a closer collaboration between developers and operations teams. But over time, potentially because of the lack of a clear definition, DevOps became a thing in and of itself. Organizations formed DevOps teams, vendors built DevOps tools, and consultancies sold DevOps methodologies and solutions. “DevOps engineer” became a role description. The brand of DevOps came to mean so many different things that it lost whatever meaning it originally had. “When DevOps was kind of created as a movement, the spirit of it was it was by practitioners, for practitioners. It was never supposed to be a specification, a job title," said Paula Kennedy, co-founder and COO at Syntasso. “It was kind of a community movement where people were frustrated at the problems between Dev and Ops. That was all it was.”As part of this confusion, the concept of DevOps shifted to mean “developers doing operations themselves”, in practice if not in theory. The two disciplines had been merged in the term, so it’s easy to see how people would think the two functions should be merged into the one team, and often the one person. Reality asserted itself on the teams doing the work, and developers soon learned that operating infrastructure is quite different to writing code. External stakeholders have become frustrated by developers that seem to spend more time building infrastructure and maintaining systems than they do on shipping new features.confirming attendee interest. A platform engineering day was part of the KubeCon NA schedule this past week and will also be included at next year’s KubeCon in London. “I haven't seen platform engineering pushed top down from a C-suite. I've seen a lot of guerilla stuff with platform and ops teams just basically going out and doing a skunkworks thing and sneaking it into production and then making a value case and growing from there,” said Keith Babo, VP of product and marketing at Solo.io. In fact, attendees at KubeCon NA tended to self-describe as platform engineers more than developers. For those the author spoke with, even developers tended to have platform engineering leanings. It’s part of thefrom an exciting new approach, full of risk and failure, to a more stable field that supports important, production workloads. “If anyone ever asks me what’s my definition of platform engineering, I tend to think of it as DevOps at scale. It’s how DevOps scales,” says Kennedy.cloud native technology, which is largely the realm of operations. That platform engineering should start to take over from DevOps in this ecosystem may not be surprising, but it does highlight important structural shifts. Companies that have invested heavily in DevOps teams may wish to revisit those organizational structures to ensure they are still fit-for-purpose. It is likely that operational concerns will require dedicated attention, and keeping them siloed within DevOps teams may cause more problems than it solves. Constantly re-inventing the same operational patterns in a distributed fashion may be adding unnecessary cost and friction, while distracting developers from the work they would honestly prefer to be doing. “I think almost like DevOps is a spiritual thing and platform engineering is a set of laws that honor that spirit,” says Babo.
