The Southeastern Mvskoke Nation is preparing for its first ever Creek Friends Festival to be held Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at 242 County Road 2254 in Troy. The deadline for the Creek Friends Festival sponsorships is July 31, according to organizers, and all proceeds will directly benefit the tribe
The Southeastern Mvskoke Nation is one of eight state-recognized tribes in Alabama, and a founding member of the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission with membership in the Intertribal Council of Alabama, and the National Congress of American Indians. The Mvskoke people were the leading cultural group in the Creek Confederacy, which was split by the Creek Civil War, the First Seminole War, and the Trail of Tears.
Gilmore was appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey of Alabama to serve as a Commissioner of the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission in 2022. She was appointed by Ivey to the Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs Advisory Board on April 1 of this year.
