A planned defense witness in the sedition trial of five Proud Boys members has been revealed as having served as a secret government informant.
and four associates was secretly acting as a government informant for nearly two years after the 2021 Capitol riot, a defense lawyer said in a court filing.
Hernandez said in court papers that the defense team was told by prosecutors Wednesday afternoon that the witness they were planning to call to the stand ThursdayThe judge ordered prosecutors to file a response to the defense filing by Thursday afternoon and scheduled a hearing for the same day, putting testimony in the case on hold until Friday. The U.S. attorney’s office did not immediately comment on the filing.
It’s the latest twist in a trial that has been bogged down by bickering between lawyers and the judge and already lasted much longer than expected. Defense lawyers have repeatedly asked, in vain, that the judge declare a mistrial over a number of issues that they say have prejudiced the case against their clients.
Tarrio, a Miami resident, served as national chairman for the far-right extremist group, whose members describe it as a politically incorrect men’sHe and the other Proud Boys could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of seditious conspiracy.
