Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants franchise continues to expand with a new Plankton-focused movie hitting Netflix in March and a theatrical release featuring the Flying Dutchman later this year.
Celebrated its 25th anniversary with Nickelodeon last year, SpongeBob SquarePants has continued to delight fans with new adventures and shenanigans through various projects. This includes Sandy Cheeks getting her own feature film adventure and hints that Plankton, despite his numerous attempts at world domination, is finally facing the consequences of Karen's exasperation with his failures.
While Plankton has long been a thorn in SpongeBob's side, he takes center stage in his own adventure, with SpongeBob and his friends joining him along the way. The first trailer for Plankton: The Movie is out, showing the premiere of the film worldwide on Netflix starting March 7th. Executive producers Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller have teamed up with director Dave Needham to bring this Plankton-centric story to life. Longtime voice actor Mr. Lawrence returns to voice Plankton, and has also co-written the screenplay alongside Kaz and Chris Viscardi. This new movie promises to reveal a fresh perspective on Plankton from those who know him best after all these years. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Jill Talley, Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Clancy Brown, and Rodger Bumpass. Adding to the excitement, original songs are crafted by Bret McKenzie, Linda Perry, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Bob Mothersbaugh, while Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper composes the film's music. The upcoming Plankton movie is just one example of the franchise's ongoing momentum. New episodes of the TV series continue to be released regularly, and spin-offs like are finding success. Adding to the anticipation, another feature film project is in development, scheduled for theatrical release later this year. While details are scarce, it has been hinted that the film will heavily feature the Flying Dutchman, with Mark Hamill taking on the role, replacing Brian Doyle-Murray. So, not only will fans be treated to a Plankton-focused movie on Netflix this spring, but a new theatrical release featuring the Flying Dutchman is also on the horizon by the end of the year
