A plane collided with a helicopter while attempting to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport outside Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, officials confirmed. The Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA ) reported that a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet and a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter collided midair while approaching Runway 33 at the airport around 9 p.m. local time. The plane, operated by American Airlines, had originated in Wichita, Kansas, according to the FAA .

The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department disclosed on social media that a small aircraft had crashed into the Potomac River near the airport. Reagan Washington National Airport also announced on X (formerly Twitter) that all takeoffs and landings at DCA had been suspended. 'Emergency personnel are responding to an aircraft incident on the airfield. The terminal remains open,' the airport stated.The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed on social media that it was assisting in the emergency response and clarified that the helicopter involved in the crash was not one of theirs. The U.S. Park Police aviation unit was actively engaged in a search and rescue operation for the incident, the agency announced.
