Could South Goulburn Island become home to Australia's first sea grape farm? The Yagbani Aboriginal Corporation believes it can, bringing the celebrated ingredient known as umibudo in Japan to the plate.

She said there were some native seaweeds that had researchers and consumers excited, including sea grapes that were part of the"There's some really amazing seaweeds growing around Australia's coast and lots of them don't grow anywhere else in the world," Dr Campbell said."But because of the diversity of seaweeds there's different flavours. For example, I know of one that, when cooked, it tastes like bacon.

"I'm really excited about the sea grapes because, regardless of external markets, this could become something the community can harvest and consume, something that's really healthy," she said.The seaweed trial at South Goulburn Island is being supported by the Darwin Aquaculture Centre, USC, and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.
