Bill banning Chinese citizens from buying land in Texas gets major overhaul
out of fear they present a national security threat. But that triggered protests all over the state, including and around Houston where many called the bill racist and xenophobic.
Now, even if it becomes law, citizens of China, Russia, North Korea and Iran will still be allowed to buy homes and businesses in Texas. Kolkhorst explained during more than 2 hours of debate on Tuesday that she has struggled to find a way to prevent people who want to do harm to the nation from buying land, while also protecting the ability of people fleeing those nations to pursue their American dreams.
Currently, Russia, China, North Korea and Iran are on that list. Kolkhorst said instead of identifying specific countries, she said she wanted the legislation to include other threats in the future if other nations are deemed a danger to the U.S. Her bill, Senate Bill 147, received an 18-12 vote on Tuesday to advance to a final vote that is expected on Wednesday in the Texas Senate.
