Pittsburgh Steelers teammates came to the defense of George Pickens on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens runs after a catch during an NFL football game, Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, in Pittsburgh. was embroiled in drama after running routes at less than full effort, wearing an eye black message that read ‘Open always,’ and yanking a Cowboys player down by the facemask after time had expired, his teammates came to defend him.and have talked with Pickens since Sunday. For one, it seems like Pickens is in a good headspace following that game.

"There are a lot of ups and downs in this league. George being a star in this league, he faces a lot more than I maybe face with the media and stuff like that," Austin said. “We’re all together at the end of the day. When we come together at the end of the day as receivers and players and talk amongst each other, we know we have each other’s back."

As for Freiermuth, the Steelers have emphasized to Pickens that he is part of a collective. Everyone in the locker room believes that Pickens understands he is just one of 53, and that is a continual talk that the Steelers have with Pickens throughout the year. “He’s in a great mood this week. He obviously wants to help us win as much as he can … He also has to understand this is a team sport, and he does, we’ve talked about that. He’s practicing hard. He understands what he needs to do," Freiermuth said.

Head coach Mike Tomlin implied that on Tuesday, there was a meeting between Pickens and himself about his behavior and how to deal with it. As for the continued decrease in his snaps, Tomlin called it ‘load management,’ and that might track, considering that Pickens played in all of the team’s 11 personnel snaps but just 9 percent of their snaps with multiple tight ends on the football field.
