Pittsburgh Steelers rookie WR Roman Wilson suffered a hamstring injury.
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson workout under the watchful eye of head coach Mike Tomlin during the team's NFL OTA's football practice in Pittsburgh, Tuesday, May 21, 2024. aggravated a previous hamstring injury he suffered last week and did not practice on Thursday, Alan Saunders of Steleers Now first reported. Sources confirmed this to PennLive. Sources state that Wilson could miss multiple weeks with the injury.
Wilson missed last week’s game against the New York Jets after being limited in two practices leading up to the game. Head coach Mike Tomlin said that Wilson has to work to play more, but the hamstring injury set him back even further than he already is, and he is not expected to play against the New York Giants.
“As we’ve talked repeatedly in this setting, Roman needs to work for me to really consider him,” Tomlin said on Tuesday. “His participation got compromised some last week. And so really, once it got compromised, I moved on.” Wilson, the team’s third-round pick out of Michigan, suffered a high ankle sprain during training camp, forcing him to miss seven weeks. This hamstring injury only sets his development back further, and he could see Wilson take what is essentially a redshirt year and not play for much of the season. With Wilson likely out, wide receiver Brandon Johnson should see the opportunity to come up from the practice squad again and play in his place at the WR5 spot.
