The Masters ...
Slow play, a hot topic on tour for years, was addressed in 2020 when the tour instituted a “tougher” stance on tortoise-like players who take 45 seconds or more to hit a shot when it is their turn. Habitual offenders are subject to a one-stroke penalty. Yet the rule rarely is enforced, and when it is, the violator typically is a player of lesser standing. In other words, Cantlay, who is ranked No. 4 in the world, would need to crawl to his ball to earn a penalty.
Secondly, slow play at the professional level gives amateurs a green light to follow suit. Except it becomes even worse because a) amateurs are not as skilled as pros, i.e. 95 strokes take longer than 68; and b) most of us are trying to squeeze 18 holes into as little time as possible, given how real life beckons back home.
— Be ready to go. Begin the process of deciding how to play your shot before your playing partner strikes his or her own ball.
