The 21-year-old shortstop, MLB.com's third-ranked prospect in the Pirates' organization, was driving his SUV when it crashed with a motorcycle carrying three people on Sánchez Highway near Los Mercaditos de Paya, Baní, according to reports, including ESPN, which cited a report from theThe three individuals on the motorcycle all died, prosecutors said.
The crash occurred around 1 a.m., according to the Post-Gazette. Both parties were out past the curfew imposed by the Dominican government due to COVID-19.Cruz played at Class A Advanced Bradenton and Class AA Altoona last season. He hit .286 with eight home runs and 10 stolen bases over 70 games between the two levels.
The 6-foot-7 shortstop spent most of the 2020 season at the Pirates' satellite camp in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
