Los Angeles street gang photographer Merrick Morton has been kicked off Instagram for promoting 'dangerous organizations.'
, Instagram has given Morton 30 days to file an appeal but it has so far been unresponsive to Morton and has offered few details on why his account has been suspended.
However, there is a clause that allows content for “public awareness which would otherwise go against our Community Guidelines.”that he suspects his suspension is due to his photos that document gang culture. Morton’s photos show members of notorious L.A. street gangs such as Venice 13, El Hoyo MaraVilla, Elm Street Watts, and 18th Street. The photos do show gritty themes of guns, drugs, and violence. However, Morton’s pioneering street photography work serves as an authentic and important historical resource for the city of Los Angeles.
