Simon Fest Sr. and his descendants were prominent merchants. They also operated saloons and a beer garden and traded in real estate.
I’m a local tour guide and really enjoy your column. I’ve noticed the name Fest in several places around downtown. There’s the Fest Block on Military Plaza , three buildings with the name Fest or Mary Fest on them at South Flores and Cevallos streets, and Fest Street that meanders through Southtown . I’ve tried internet searching, but only end up with information on various festivals.
Delving into how well-known San Antonio streets got their monikers “They are very confusing to study, as they reuse a few names over and over,” Ruckman said. “For example, Simon Sr.’s wife’s name was Mary, and after her death, he married another woman named Mary.” His son, Simon Jr. also was married to a woman named Mary, who was called Mary Jr. It was Simon Sr. who built the homestead that survives at 119 Simon St. after a 2017 restoration.
