The year-long construction effort was designed to improve access between Pioneer Square, downtown Seattle, and the new waterfront park. Trevor Boone, owner of Emerald City Guitars, expressed optimism about the changes. "As the city grows, it faces some challenges, and this, I think, really is a paramount thing that had to happen, kind of lifting the lid off of an amazing area," Boone said. The project involved upgrades along South King, South Main, South Washington Streets, and Yesler Way. Improvements include the addition of more one-way streets, curbless streets, over 150 bollards, nine new tabled pedestrian crossings, and 13,400 square feet of newly planted areas. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell highlighted the transformation, stating, "Yesterday’s construction site has become today’s pedestrian pathways and a new open green space that enables us to walk, pike, and roll between the waterfront and the rest of downtown." Boone, who has lived in the area since he was 6 years old, hopes the changes will alter perceptions of Pioneer Square, which has faced challenges with drugs, crime, and homelessness. "I’m looking out for all of my friends who own shops and people who live down here, and it just gives us a voice; it makes it feel like people care about us again," he said. Lisa Howard, executive director of the Alliance for Pioneer Square, emphasized the beautification aspect of the project and its role in the city's broader improvement plan. "This is a moment in time where people will see change in the neighborhood and are able to come and enjoy the things that we know are really great in Pioneer Square that people are missing out on right now," Howard said. Howard added that new restaurants and businesses are expected to open soon, further enhancing the experience for both residents and tourists.
