.jonathan_c_ong, a Filipino associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was among the 28 scholars named as 2022 Andrew Carnegie Fellow by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
Jonathan Corpus Ong, associate professor of global digital media in the department of communication, was among those awarded a $200,000 stipend in recognition of his efforts to address important and enduring issues confronting society.
Ong said he was “deeply honored” to represent the University of Massachusetts Amherst, stressing the recognition showed the need for “more engaged ethnographic work that can interrupt dominant paradigms about how we think about social media and democracy in a global context.” "It's important that communication scholars are supported in deepening understanding about how digital tools that promise belonging or intimacy could also drive people into despair or division,” he added.
Ong authored the book “The Poverty of Television: The Mediation of Suffering in Class-Divided Philippines” and served as co-editor of “Taking the Square: Mediated Dissent and Occupations of Public Space.”
