Volunteer firefighters received praise for staying behind to fight the fast-moving Forsyth Fire.Pine Valley Fire and EMS is a small volunteer team of community
Pine Valley Fire and EMS is a small volunteer team of community members who train regularly in case disaster strikes.Davis and other volunteer firefighters were doing some routine training when the Forsyth Fire crept near them on Thursday.
She said their training turned into real life, real quick.“We got there kinda all hands-on deck, we dispersed into action, and we really train so much and work so well together, everything that needed to happen, just kind of happened,” Davis said. Candy Stevenson, the Public Information Officer for the National Interagency Fire Center, said while it's devastating that homes were lost, hundreds of homes were saved.“Firefighters are working 14-hour shifts,” said Sgt. Lucas Alfred with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. “Morning and night, 24-hour coverage every single day.” For Davis and her husband, who also volunteers on the team, signing up for the job years ago was a calling. She is still processing the loss and support from the community she loves. “It’s really beautiful to see how everyone just steps up and does what they need to do and try to take care of each other,” Davis said, getting emotional. “I’m so proud to be part of this organization, this community of first responders, and our fire department.”Favorable weather conditions have guided the fire away from the community, but a threat still remains, and evacuation orders are still in place.
