The town limits currently start about a mile northeast of I-65. Pine Level Mayor Zachary Bigley says HB 598 would expand the limits about 2.5 miles southwest to Pine Level Volunteer Fire Department Station 2.

) - It’s a prime area of land, the businesses off exit 186 off I-65 gets hundreds, if not thousands of visitors daily. Pine Level Mayor Zachary Bigley says annexing it is crucial for the future of the newly incorporated town.

“It’s an absolute game changer,” Bigley said. “Just to put things in perspective, our yearly budget right now is about $230,000. We just got incorporated in 2023, this sets us up for prosperity for my grandchildren.”would expand the limits about 2.5 miles southwest to Pine Level Volunteer Fire Department Station 2. Bigley adds that the area is already in Pine Level’s police jurisdiction, so they already get half of the area’s sales tax at 1.5%, but annexing the area means the town gets the full 3%. HB 598 co-sponsor Rep. Jerry Starnes has yet to put his signature on the bill, which is necessary for the bill to move forward. According to Bigley, the hesitation came after Rep. Starnes had a conversation with Prattville Mayor Bill Gillespie, Jr. “With this legislative session, if he doesn’t sign by tomorrow , if he doesn’t sign, the bill’s dead,” Bigley explained. Mayor Gillespie says he’s not opposed to the annexation, in fact he doesn’t know if he’s for or against it. Gillespie attributes that to an unclear map of the plan and a lack of communication. This is the map given to WSFA by Mayor Gillespie that shows the proposed town limits of Pine Level if HB 598 passes. Gillespie says his concerns about the map include legibility and a lack of landmarks.“It was not the quality of map that I was anticipating,” Gillespie said. “The lines of communication seem to have been cut off, I’ve called the mayor a few times since our one conversation there, and I would like to have a better understanding.” With time running out in the legislative session, a meeting between the two may not resolve any issues that may exist. Both city leaders will have to wait until state lawmakers make a final decision. Not reading this story on the WSFA News App? Get news alerts FASTER and FREE in the
