Amy Milam, a veteran teacher turned reading intervention specialist at Pine Level Elementary School, uses a rewards program called the Woot Woot Wagon to encourage students to improve their reading and math skills.
At Pine Level Elementary School, when you hear the cheers and songs in the hallways, that usually means the Woot Woot Wagon is making its rounds. The wagon, stocked with stickers, pencils, pom poms and other rewards and treats, is used to encourage students to get good grades and improve their scores in math and reading. Amy Milam is the school’s reading intervention specialist and one of the teachers leading the way with songs and plenty of smiles.
She recently started working as the school’s reading intervention specialist, but she’s a familiar face at Pine Level Elementary. “This is year 19. I spent almost all of my career here, teaching second grade,” she said. “So when I heard about this position, I definitely was ready to make that jump.” As the reading intervention specialist, she gets to work with all grade levels and all students. It’s an opportunity to watch them progress while studying the latest educational data and research. “We look at the data a lot, and so I get to look at exactly where they start, and then where we want to move them, and how they’re making that progress,” Milam said. And when the students reach their reading and math goals, they get rewards via the Woot Woot Wagon. It’s just another chance for the veteran teacher-turned-specialist to connect with her students, who she says are always excited when the wagon comes around. Milam says she loves working at Pine Level Elementary. It’s the school her children went to, and it’s the one where she built her career. “I spent my entire career here. I love Pine Level. it’s more than just a job, it’s really family, so I love it,” she said
