It’s going to be a weekend full of vendors, artists and local food at the Fiesta Del Sol festival in Pilsen. This year, organizers are celebrating 51 years of a festival that spans an eight-block space along Cermak Road.

Blanca Acevedo, one of the festival’s co-chairs, said it’s going to be a hot one amid the heat wave, but organizers are ready for it. “We have a super fun and packed weekend,” Acevedo said. “It’s gonna be hot and so we’re excited … the sun is out. I’m excited to see everyone return to the festival. We have over 50 vendors. We have two stages of entertainment. … We’re going to have some karaoke. We’re gonna have a little bit of everything: Mexican bands, local bands, and of course, delicious food.”
Fiesta Del Sol grew out of grassroot movements in the Pilsen community and continued to grow over the years. “Thanks to local leaders, students and the community that came together to demand the building of Benito Juarez High School,” Acevedo said in reference to the movement that started it all. “So through that celebration, it became a block party and then over the years, we’re now celebrating 51 years of that initial block party, which is now a mile-long festival. And so definitely one-of-a-kind, family-friendly, alcohol-free and made for the community.
