The airport’s operating hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, but pilots can arrive and depart after 5 p.m. before sunset so long as they pre-arrange with airport management, the airport’s general manager, Carl True, said.

Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Avalon Station received an S.O.S. message from the cellphone of one of the plane’s occupants notifying them that a crash had occurred, sheriff’s officials said.The airport, which also goes by Airport in the Sky, sits 1,600 feet above sea level and has a 3,000-foot-long runway. It operates from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and is generally closed to airplane operations outside of those times.
