Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount explains Christopher Pike's deep friendship with Number One and how she makes him a better Captain.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Anson Mount explains the shared past and deep friendship between Captain Christopher Pike and Number One AKA Commander Una Chin-Riley . Strange New Worlds season 1 ended with Una's shocking arrest by Starfleet after they learned she is a genetically engineered Illyrian. However, Strange New Worlds' season 2 trailer shows Number One back as First Officer of the USS Enterprise, which must come as a relief to Captain Pike.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT At the press junket for Strange New Worlds season 2, Screen Rant took part in a roundtable interview with Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn. Mount elaborated on how Number One helps Captain Pike overcome his "weaknesses" and he reveals just how long Chris and Una have been friends. Read his quote below:

[Pike and Una have] been friends since the Academy. And I believe that Una has become that friend and confidant for Pike that actually is able to show him those things that I'm always so critical about that are swirling around my head that I think are my weaknesses. When you turn those around, you can actually see those actually can be seen as strengths, as well... And that's why she's so important to his being a Captain.

Pike & Number One's Friendship Is At The Heart of Strange New Worlds Captain Pike often hails Commander Una Chin-Riley as "the best First Officer" in Starfleet, but that only scratches the surface of the respect and admiration Pike has for Number One. As Anson Mount revealed, Una and Pike have been friends since Starfleet Academy, and the loyalty they forged carried them both to the Starship Enterprise, the flagship of the United Federation of Planets.

In the roundtable interview Screen Rant joined, Rebecca Romijn joked that Pike and Number One are the "mom and dad" of the Enterprise. The Captain and First Officer do have their hands full overseeing their crew, many of whom are young Starfleet Officers just beginning to realize their potential like Lt. Spock , Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh , and Ensign Nyota Uhura .
