An animal rescue based in Pierce County is seeing an increase in pets surrendered by their owners.
Diana Van Dusen with Horn Creek Rescue, which does not charge for a pet surrender, said, "90% of the animals that we get that were that are left abandoned or owner surrender, reached out for help and had been turned away by Tacoma Humane Society.
"by the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County, the shelter addressed the price increase from a historic $70, to $400 per animal in June 2025. The Humane Society said the rise reflects the "average cost of providing three days of baseline care for an animal entering the shelter."
