Pierce Brosnan as Ron Ritchie standing in front of an evidence board in The Thursday Murder Club
Days after it unseated longtime champion KPop Demon Hunters from the number one spot on the Netflix viewership charts, the new murder mystery film The Thursday Murder Club has lost its crown. The movie had been holding on to the top spot on Netflix's domestic charts ever since its debut last week, but it has been replaced by a rather unusual new challenger.
The new number one film on Netflix domestically isn't a major franchise entry or a star-studded original; it is, in fact, a true-crime documentary engineered for viral success. The number one film on Netflix on September 3, according to FlixPatrol, was the documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish. The film earned 452 points on FlixPatrol on September 3, which was enough to secure the crown domestically. But The Thursday Murder Club was still the top choice for audiences worldwide. Directed by Chris Columbus, The Thursday Murder Club is based on the best-selling mystery novel written by Richard Osman; the movie stars Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie in the lead roles. The Thursday Murder Club follows a group of retirees who pass time by trying to crack cold cases. They're called upon to use every skill that they've acquired over the years when someone is actually murdered in their facility. The movie opened to mostly positive reviews, and is currently sitting on a 77% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. In her review, Collider's Maggie Lovitt compared the movie to Only Murders in the Building and Book Club, and wrote that"Netflix should go ahead and greenlight the next four novels to be adapted as quickly as possible." Since the source novel spawned multiple follow-ups, Netflix might actually have a companion series to the Knives Out and Murder Mystery movies. Netflix Audiences Love a Good Crime Story Unknown Number, on the other hand, follows the bizarre true story of a high school student who was mercilessly targeted by an online stalker. The incident became serious enough for the local sheriff to investigate, followed by intervention from an FBI liaison. What they discovered left everybody involved in shock. Unknown Number doesn't have an official Rotten Tomatoes score yet, although all four reviews that are currently listed are positive. Netflix has long been a hub for true crime content, and Unknown Number has all the makings of a breakout hit. You can watch the film at home, along with The Thursday Murder Club.
