A series of recent incidents involving vehicles has kept local police busy. A pickup truck crashed through a window at Orange High School, sending shards of glass into the pool. A car fire near West Brainard Road also required police assistance. Other incidents included a driver falling asleep at the wheel, a car with a faulty headlight, and a driver with an expired license and outstanding warrants.

Police responded to Orange High School, located in Pepper Pike, at 3 p.m. Feb. 1 on a report of a Dodge Ram pickup truck that had driven through a window near the indoor pool. Officers found that the driver, a Garfield Heights man, 57, was on school grounds for a valid reason. He said that as he was trying to back the truck up as close to the school as possible, he went over a small snow bank and gave the accelerator a little too much gas.

However, glass shards landed in the pool and 240,000 gallons of water had to be drained to remove them. Police assisted Pepper Pike firefighters at the scene of a car fire near West Brainard Road at 8 p.m. Feb. 4. They remained on the scene for about an hour, with no injuries reported in what was ruled a total loss on the fire damage. The driver, a Mantua woman, told police that she began to smell burning oil as she got off the freeway. While stopped at a traffic light, she saw smoke coming from the engine compartment and got out safely before the SUV became engulfed in flames. A Highland Heights man, 27, escaped injury after he fell asleep at the wheel of his Subaru Impreza around 1 a.m. Feb. 1 on the freeway and struck a guardrail. A patrol officer stopped a Dodge Durango with one headlight out at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 and found that the driver, a Cleveland man, 29, had a suspended license and multiple active warrants.

McAuliffe Middle School would become the sole upper elementary school for grades 5 and 6, while Jackson Memorial High School would house seventh and eighth graders. Jackson Liberty High School would then serve as the single high school for grades 9-12.
