The city of Pickerington purchased 200-plus acres south of town five years ago with a promise to the seller that it would be developed.

has planned to transform more than 200 acres on the southern edge of town from corn and soybeans to middle-class homes and businesses.

But it wasn't until City Council met earlier this month that the voices of residents were effectively eliminated from any decision about the project moving forward. Councilman Kevin Kemper, a former journalist, agrees with plans for single family homes and condominiums on half the property and commercial development on a quarter of the land. But he strongly opposed using an emergency vote which bypassed the public's voice.

While some fault previous council members for prematurely entering a contract, many agree that had the city not purchased the land, that it could have become entirely residential, with as many as 750 new homes, burdening awithout adding income tax. Pickerington has Franklin County's lowest tax rate at one percent, less than half of most other municipalities.
