Steel-High defeated Halifax 52-13. Matthew O'Haren | Special to PennLiveTwo of the state’s most successful programs over the last decade plus will square off for a trip to the state semifinals on Friday night in Selinsgrove. Steel-High, which won its sixth consecutive District 3 title earlier in the postseason, will take on Southern Columbia, coming off a dominant win over Troy, in the 3A quarterfinals.RB Jerome Ross III, QB Kayden Cole Stephesn, LB Angel Luciano, LB Nishaun Ward-McMullen, WR Silas Hernandez, DB Desuan RomanIt has been a season of resiliency for Steel-High. The program lost its home field. They lost a beloved coach to a battle with ALS. They lost a former player to gun violence. And yet, Andrew Erby has kept this group together through all of it, and has the Rollers playing some of its best football at the right time. This group has so many athletes, and should try to leverage that in this game. It’s a big opportunity for running back Jerome Ross III to show the state the type of player he is—which Erby says is college caliber.Just when people might have thought that the Southern Columbia era had met its end, the Tigers came out and stomped who many pegged as the new head honcho in District 4 in Troy. This group is the typical Southern Columbia unit with a handful of weapons in the run game, a capable quarterback in Hockenbroch that can take advantage if you overcommit, and a defense that is able to tackle people in the backfield at will. Will they be able to do both against a hyper-athletic Rollers group with an elite linebacker unit? That’s the question. This is such a fascinating matchup between two contrasting squads with a ton of success. There should be pockets of the game where both teams succeed, but the lean here is with a Rollers’ unit that should have a slight-edge in explosiveness.Dan Sostek is a member of the high school sports team at PennLive after joining the outlet in 2021.
